Originating in 1900 in Huangshan District, Anhui Province, Taiping Houkui is a baked green tea and one of the finest "Jian Cha" (Pointy Tea) varieties. Its name derives from:
"Kui" (Supreme): Refers to its large, imposing leaf shape and honors its creator, Wang Kui Cheng.
"Hou" (Monkey): Named after its production area, Yaokeng Village, Taiping County.
Growing Environment
The tea is cultivated between Huangshan Mountain and Taiping Lake, mostly above 300m altitude,
● featuring:High forest coverage, fertile soil (black sandy loam, yellow-brown earth).
● Subtropical monsoon climate: Warm, humid, and misty—ideal for "high-mountain cloud tea."
Harvesting
● Season: Only 15–20 days between Guyu (Late April) and Lixia (Early May).
● Time: Picked before noon on cloudy or sunny days, stopping before Lixia.
● Standard: One bud with three or four leaves, following the "Four Picks & Eight Rejects" principle.
Production Process
Traditional Handmade Method:Sha Qing (Kill-Green): Halts oxidation.
● Hong Bei (Baking): Divided into pre-drying (Mao Hong), final drying (Zu Hong), and re-roasting (Fu Bei).
● Improved Handmade Method: Adds a "shaping" step for uniformity.
Quality Characteristics
● Appearance: "Two leaves hugging a bud" (Two Knives & One Spear), flat and straight, dark green with hidden pekoe, some veins showing a subtle red hue.
● Aroma: Orchid-like, fresh, and long-lasting.

● Taste: Mellow, sweet, and refreshing, with a unique "elegant charm" (Ya Yun).
